THINGS TO DO

Famous for it’s quaint streets, outdoor markets and local pubs, Ashbourne is a town full of Derbyshire charm and nearby to some amazing parts of the Peak District. Ashbourne has had a market on it’s cobbled streets since 1257, and still to this day you can browse and buy from the historic market stalls on Thursdays (albeit a smaller market) and Saturdays. Also steeped in history is the town’s Thirteenth Century church of St. Oswald, whose spire gracefully dominates the townscape.

Another of the many charming things about Ashbourne are it's independent shops. There's quality clothes shops such as SACS and Young Ideas, great local shoe shops such as Wigleys, gorgeous antique shops and an Old Sweet Shoppe & Milkshake Bar! A day can be happily spent wondering around these lovely shops. Things are just as glorious outside of the shops as in them- this town is known for it's Georgian architecture. These buildings really do make you feel as if you're walking in another era!

Being the closest town to the tranquil area of natural beauty, Dovedale, Ashbourne is a great base for some amazing outdoor adventures. Dovedale is a place where everyone can enjoy the scenery and sounds of the river. From keen hikes to more relaxed strolls, follow the River Dove into the forest or climb your way to the top of Thorpe Cloud and enjoy the amazing panoramic view- whatever you get up to when you explore Dovedale you’re bound to fall in love with this picturesque part of Derbyshire. A tip for first time visitors is to wear wellies or walking boots, otherwise walking over the famous stepping stones might be a tad tricky/damp.

Dovedale is a twenty minute drive from Ashbourne, making it an ideal place to stay if you fancy a walking holiday in the Peak District.

Equally as impressive as the stepping stones of Dovedale is another nearby attraction, Sudbury Hall & Museum of Childhood. This Seventeenth century house is full of wonderful design and craftsmanship of the era and the National Trust museum is fascinating.
